Center for Writing and Learning

Making an appointment

You can make a writing center appointment in a number of ways. If you want to meet with a writing assistant during our daytime hours, you can call 737-5640 or stop by the writing center in Waldo 123. If you want to reserve a time to meet with a writing assistant in the evening, you can sign yourself up at the Writing desk in the Valley Library (next to the reference desk on the main floor) or call 737-8385 during our evening hours.

We highly recommend calling or stopping by to make your appointment at least a day before you want to meet with a writing assistant. Of course, we are more than happy to work with you if you just walk in with your paper. However, particularly around midterms and towards the end of the term, our schedule can be too full to take walk-in appointments.

Some things to keep in mind when making an appointment

First, we strongly encourage you to schedule your appointment at least a day before your paper is due. This will give you some time to make your revisions before handing in the paper.

Second, you need to decide whether you want a half-hour or hour-long appointment. A half-hour is probably enough if your paper is less than about 4 pages double-spaced. If your paper is longer or you are working on any type of application writing (resume, cover letter, personal statement, etc.), please make an hour-long appointment.

Finally, you will want to specify the type of writing you are working on. In some cases, for example, one writing assistant might have more experience with the type of writing you are doing than others. For example, if you are writing for a media class, getting a writing assistant who has media writing experience can be very helpful. Similarly, if you have worked with a specific writing assistant and want to work together again, please feel free to request that person.
