Tips for a Successful Appointment
What to Bring:
It helps if you can bring two copies of your paper. You and the writing assistant will be reading the paper together, so it's good if you both have a copy. In addition, you will want to bring a copy of your assignment sheet. This helps the writing assistant understand the teacher's purpose for the assignment and what he or she is looking for. In some cases, it is also good to have a copy of your paper on disk. We do have a computer lab, so you can make changes to your paper directly after the appointment.
Be active during the appointment:
When you come to the writing center, you are the expert on your paper. As such, the writing assistant will ask you questions both about the assignment and what you want to communicate to the reader. In most cases, a conversation with a writing assistant will result in a number of different possibilities for revision. It's important that you are very active in this process, bringing up your own ideas, rejecting things that won't work, and adding to ideas that show potential.
